Description

Approaches to literary theory and criticism constantly change – from the time of Plato and Aristotle to the present day, critics and philosophers have debated the big questions regarding literature. This course addresses these questions: What makes good literature? What is literature good for? How should literature be interpreted? What is the relationship between the author, text, reader and the world?

Objectives

The students will recognize, understand, and appreciate the different perspectives in which literature can be read and criticized. The students will understand the practical value in understanding how the historical attitudes about literature shaped literary theory and criticism. Finally, this course will give the students the solid analytical tools for their own work in literary criticism.
