Description

The syllabus of this course has a multi-layered structure, which includes a comprehensive grammar and vocabulary syllabus integrating listening, speaking, writing and reading. Regarding reading, emphasis will be put on comprehension, vocabulary knowledge and extensive reading, It aims at developing learning skills by involving students in task-based approach, by leading them to work autonomously with the dictionary and other language resources. It aims at improving students’ language skills and especially skills in reading comprehension. The texts for this course will help students improve their comprehension of diverse topics and subject areas (e.g., social science, natural science, and humanities) with various modes of discourse (e.g., exposition, narration, and argumentation). Students’ critical thinking and higher order comprehension skills are expected to improve as greater weight will be placed on inferential skills throughout the semester. The texts cover cultural aspects of contemporary English speaking countries helping their intercultural education. Writing is developed through a more in-depth study of grammatical structures and through further practice in writing techniques for paragraphs and, especially, the five-paragraph essay. Students continue to improve their ability to write a variety of sentence types and engage in peer critique and substantial revision.

Objectives

Through this course, students will be able to reinforce their understanding of grammatical structures with the help of a variety of exercises. They will be able to use listening tasks such as controlled speaking activities that lead them to attain free speaking abilities. As concerns, the reading skill: students will be able to practice reading skills such as skimming, scanning, intensive reading for a specific purpose, understanding text structures, and so on. In the writing section, students will be able to improve and develop their writing skills and produce letters, emails, proposals, essays, reports, narratives, and reviews.

Introduction to the course. Students are presented with the syllabus and the evaluation.

Material World. Students work with exercises related to shopping and services, money and spending, advertising and marketing, idioms, prepositions, phrasal verbs and word formation. In addition The story of Stuff is analyzed followed with exercises.

Conditionals, mixed conditionals, wishes, unreal past, phrases with hypothetical meaning . Students practice with different exercises. The speaking section offers students opportunities to learn how to make and answer a complaint and argue a case.

Writing a for and against essay. The writing section offers students opportunity to examine essay of such a kind. In the end they write their own essay.

Back to nature, outdoor environment and activities, landscape and geographical features, extreme weather natural conditions, sounds in nature. Students discuss on the given topics and continue with exercises on idioms, prepositions, phrasal verbs, and word formation.

Ice Breakers Students read the text and work with cross text multiple matching, answering questions, read for opinion and attitude. The next section offers exercises on reported speech, reposting verbs, articles and determiners.

The art of entertaining Students discuss on the significance of entertainment, different forms of entertainment. They discuss on the impact of Radio, TV, film , books, literature, music.

Risking life and limb Students analyze the text and work with multiple-choice questions, answering questions, and they read for specific information.
