Description

The course examines diverse modes of autobiographical writing (autobiography, memoir, testimonial, personal blogs, and conversion narrative) as texts that represent the self in society through the writing of memories. It explores the ways in which writers construct and represent memory and the impact these narratives have on our understanding of the political and cultural context in which they are produced. In this course students will focus on specific literary genres in order to examine how authors use the literary form to make sense of their world. Students will learn the analytical skills of close reading, literary interpretation, and how to build a text-based argument in order to uncover meaning found in literary texts. This course is an introduction to literary analysis and will introduce students to the skills necessary for literary scholarship. In this class, students will learn how to analyze literature and interact with the historical and cultural discourses literary texts engage. The students will also learn how to teach fiction analysis in elementary and secondary education.
