This course focuses on the expressive and aesthetic aspects of photography in fine art. Emphasis will be placed on the use of the camera, composition, film exposure and dark room techniques to achieve an artistic effect and to continue further with the areas of negative quality, printing and good presentation. This course also focuses on technical skills and also expands the understanding of the ways in which we construct and read images. Photography is presented as a tool for individual creative expression, with emphasis on the technique and development of visual reading. Students will develop their ability to execute photographic images and also express their unique individual artistic ideas. Course content includes systematic exploration of techniques through demonstration and experimentation in the classroom. Students will be introduced to Photoshop as well as the basics of digital scanning and printing. Students can learn to work with analog cameras while still using the process of digital scanning and printing. The course will include in a portfolio of original photographs.

The content of this course presents a structured learning approach that will give students a framework to work on design projects and photographic skills for personal communication. This course aims to promote independent learning and help build design skills, including the ability to research, plan and execute work in a systematic way. Students are encouraged to adopt a thematic approach, documenting all developmental work. With the transition to a digital workflow, now is the best time to embrace communication as the main focus in photography education.
