Description

The purpose of this course is to examine the theories and recent studies about educational development. Studying various areas of educational development, specifically spoken language, reading and writing.

Objectives

Emphasis is placed on integrating educational development during the school day as an integral part of all content areas. It attempts to reflect on current issues in early education, intervention programs in the early stages to help those who have difficulty in reading, learning skills development in appropriate conditions and benchmarks for skills development.

Upon completion of the course students are able to: Compare and contrast various perspectives to literacy development (reading and writing) in young children.

Understand the development of young children’s literacy. Describe the stages of development in children’s literacy and define the essential indicators at each stage

Distinguish and implements the features of good literacy pedagogy for children at classroom level as well as through partnerships with parents and the wider community.

Ensure that children’s literacy development supports their oral language development

Highlight the strategies as being particularly effective in supporting children’s literacy development in different language learning contexts

Assess and plan efficiently for progression in children’s literacy development at teacher/classroom level and school level.

Use a variety of assessment strategies to monitor young children's progress in achieving outcomes and plan learning activities accordingly

Understand how various types of materials and resources, including current technology, can be used in early childhood classrooms to support, literacy development.
