Description

Educational psychology course introduces students to research-based concepts and principles about human learning, development, and motivation and how that information is applied to classroom teaching. This course will examine the contributions that psychology can make to educational practice. It will provide a review of the human growth and development literature that is essential knowledge for those who will be working with children and adolescents in educational settings. The implications of psychological theory for educational research and practice will be discussed. Other topics include ability grouping, gifted and talented students, learning disabilities, community differences and diversity issues in education and psychology, motivation, and educational measurement (standardized testing and classroom assessment).

Objectives

At the end of the course, the student should be able: - To understand key concepts in the areas of development, learning theory, motivation and teaching. - To explore applications of concepts in contemporary educational settings through case studies, visits to schools, and other activities. - To become familiar with contemporary issues in educational psychology and to consider those issues from various viewpoints (e.g. teacher, student, parent, administrator). - To develop your personal philosophy of education, principles of learning, views of the role of education in the development of the individual, and suggestions for improving current educational practices.
